So, I heard that the national bird of the US (currently the Bald Eagle) was originally argued against for the turkey. I think a turkey would have been better, they are ground level, everyone has access to find one, and they are very common (at least here in the north east.)

I guess I just like the idea of the USA being represented by 'the common, everyday, useful' rather than the 'dumb, rare, elitist' type of item.

@LexPendragon But I grew up in the PNW, where our national bird was rare (DDT; they're more common now) but could be seen in the wild.

Beautiful, graceful, vindictive to smaller birds, kind of a trash-picker or bully to get food. They're a good US symbol.
